Allan Ramsay’s rollicking Scots satires are brought together here for the first time in a two-volume set complete with a biographical introduction, on-page glosses and extensive notes. A short linguistic supplement appended to vol. 2 contains his observations on English and Scots (1721), his Scots-English glossary (1729), and an exhaustive rhyme list compiled from the text of the present edition that may serve as a guide to his pronunciation.
Roger Greaves is a translator, writer, editor and publisher. He has written academically on the fable books of Ramsay, La Fontaine, Houdar de la Motte and Robert Samber and on their significance in the early European book trade.
